"Techno" to me is just a broad name for all kinds of electronic/dance music.

Trance, house, happy hardcore, drum and bass, etc, are just a few of the "sub genres" of techno. You can even break it down more if you wanted to. Trance can be broken down into different groups like euro trance, goa trance, vocal, uplifting, progressive, etc.

It's like any kind of music. A person can say they listen to rock music, but there are so many sub genres like alternative rock, arena rock, hard rock, heavy metal, punk rock, etc.

Take care!

Hey there I did some research for you and this is what I found hope it helps:

Techno is a form of electronic dance music that had its early beginnings in Western Europe in the late 1970s[1] and later developed and established as a genre in Detroit, Michigan during the 1980s.[2] It was influenced by Chicago house, electro, New Wave, funk and futuristic fiction themes that were prevalent and relative to modern culture during the end of the Cold War in industrial America at that time. Following the initial success of Detroit techno as a musical culture — at the very least on a regional level — an expanded and related subset of genres in the 1990s emerged globally.

The term "techno" is derived from the word technology. Music journalists and fans of the genre are generally selective in their use of the term, careful not to conflate it with related but distinct genres, such as house, trance and hardcore. At the same time, "techno" is commonly confused with general terms such as electronic music and dance music.[3][4] Electronic dance music has many forms, one of which is techno.

Techno means that the music is created thru technology and their noises rather than by actual musical instruments. I have no idea what 'trance' is.

yes, techno is anything dance-able, but trance is just a sub-genre of techno. trance is usually a lot more melodic, and much of it is inspired by new age music. sometimes, techno can itself, be a sub-division. techno (the subgenre) I usually think of as a lot more robotic-sounding.

it all came from House but techno has never been called house. When it all started there was just house and techno. Then came all the sub groups of house:funky house, hard house, progressive house and many more up until now with the recent outburst of electro house.Even trance came from house. They are all completely different sounds and unless you like and know the music then you can't tell the difference. Now because the different types of house have been around so long they are not called house but called funky house, electro house, hard house etc.
But in the begining their was only House and Techno.
As spoke in many, many old house music tunes they have the sample "and in the begining their was jack, and from this groove came the groove of all grooves, then house music was born"

EDM(electronic dance music) is the whole genre.

Well the only way you can truly find out the characteristics of each genre of EDM is to find them out yourself by listening to those genres.

Techno is a subgenre of EDM that is very different from the EDM subgenre Trance.

Try www.Trackitdown.net under the "featured" section of Trance or any other electronic music you prefer and listen to their 2 min samples (great to find what you as an individual might enjoy)

Good Luck,
