Hi,
My boyfriend & I are planning a trip to Cleveland Ohio for the Fabulous Food show for the weekend November 9-11, 2007. Neither of us has been to Cleveland before. Where would be the best places to eat, visit, play, relax, site see, & slept while we are there. Any ideas, tips, discounts or info would be great. Thanks

If you get a chance explore the lake shore. Even if it is only behind the Rock Hall. You can't beat the North Coast or the people that live there. Sure there are some rough areas, but Cleveland is great if you look around. I love Tower City and all the exclusive shops there, the Rock Hall is something you shouldn't miss no matter what. Right beside the hall is the Science Center and it is really great too. I used to live south of Cleveland and it is very easy to get around if you remember that if you hit water (Lake Erie) your as north as you can get!! LOL 77 runs north and south, 480 runs east and west. Enjoy the city, the sights, the food and the people. It's all special in Cleveland......I miss it.

I think its really stupid of that guy to tell you to stay away from the East side of Cleveland and then tell you to go to University Circle, which is on the East side! LOL! Okay so the best places to stay is downtown, there are some affordable hotels, like the Holiday Inn one is on Euclid and E. 18th street and another one I believe is on Lakeside. I agree with the person who said to try out Coventry, they have some great restaurants like Tommy's and Hunans. It's also a great place to hang out. Also check out Shaker Square, they have a lot of nice restaurants there too. If you like Italian food you might want to try Little Italy, (I've never been, but I hear the food is great down there). Funny all these great places to check out are on the East side of town. Hmm go figure? Also there is the West side Market which is nice to stroll through on a Saturday morning. Then you know there's the norm, like the museums, and what not. Have fun and enjoy your stay, oh and by the way, you may want to double check on your directions, the city is doing a major project down town so a lot of roads have been rerouted.

In November, the one thing that you should do IMO in Cleveland is get tickets to see the Cleveland Orchestra, if possible. Hopefully, you can find tickets for a musical program that you would enjoy. Severance Hall is a renown concert hall and the Cleveland Orchestra is one of the best in the world.

Unfortunately, I don't believe the Cleveland Art Museum will be open, but you should check. It's superb, but undergoing a major expansion and renovation.

If your boyfriend likes cars or would like to get close and personal with a Mustang WWII fighter, you should visit the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum at the Western Reserve Historical Society.

My favorite:

Don't overlook the Historical Society Museum, which is like a miniature Smithsonian:

http://www.wrhs.org/history/default.asp

The Museum features two homes which provide a glimpse into Millionaire's Row about a century ago, which was home to some of the richest people in the world:

The Natural History Museum has a superb planetarium and a fun collection.

Planetarium:

Severance Hall, the Cleveland Art Museum, the Western Reserve Historical Society and the Natural History Museum, all are located within very easy walking distance at University Circle. While there, eat at "That Place on Bellflower."

The Cleveland Botanical Garden is a favorite of many visitors, located close to University Circle, and recreates landscapes from both Madagascar and Costa Rica:

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo always is fun and is located a short drive from downtown.

If you never been to a Rain Forest (and Cleveland has one of the largest in the country), here's your chance (admission to the zoo and Rain Forest is only $7 in November):

If you really like Rock & Roll, you'll enjoy the Hall of Fame, especially the theaters IMO.

The Great Lakes Science Center is fun, especially if you've never been to a major science center, and it has an OmniMax theater:

http://www.greatscience.com/

The Rock and Roll HOF and Great Lakes Science Center are connected to Tower City by a rapid transit train.

You might be able to catch a Browns game, or some event at the Q, the downtown arena.

http://www.theqarena.com/publish/events/index.php

Playhouse Square is one of the largest theater complexes in the U.S. You can probably find something of enjoyment there:

http://playhousesquare.org/Events/EventsViewAll.aspx

The Cleveland Playhouse also is superb:

http://www.clevelandplayhouse.com/index.asp

For shopping, you probably would most enjoy a trip to Legacy Village and Beachwood Place, located almost next to each other:

http://www.beachwoodplace.com/html/index13.asp

http://www.legacy-village.com/Directory.asp

If you're not driving, staying downtown, and traveling light, try taking the Rapid Transit from the airport to downtown.

The Great Lakes Brewery in Ohio City is fun for beer lovers, and it's a short walk from the West Side Market.

The Improv Comedy Club in the Flats usually is a great night:

http://www.nauticaflats.com/venues/

Personally, I also enjoy the Rock Bottom Brewery in the Flats.

If you like steaks, I prefer the Hyde Park on Prospect. The Hyde Park chain currently is largely an Ohio chain, so if you're coming from out of state, it might be a unique opportunity to eat at one:

http://www.hydeparkrestaurants.com/maps/hp-dt/index.htm

A visit there also will give you a chance to look around part of Tower City, one of the most ambitious building projects ever undertaken in the U.S. (unless you read about it, you can't imagine its size). See pages 204-205 of the following book:

http://books.google.com/books?id=W9IMbcidB2IC&pg=PA205&lpg=PA205&dq=van+swearingen+terminal+tower+complex&source=web&ots=jPsnqS9zOp&sig=j_r0YmYouNFJV6KqHo_hq0Q-LHo#PPA204,M1

Also, please take the time to walk through the Cleveland Arcade. The attached Hyatt would be a fun place to stay. It's a memorable architectural gem:

http://cleveland.about.com/od/architectureandbuildings/p/arcade.htm

Key Tower is the tallest building between New York City and Chicago, but, apart from the lobby, there is no public area that would provide a skyline view of Cleveland. (Unlike in past decades, especially when Erieview featured building-top restaurants and a favorite bar, there is no opportunity in Cleveland today to enjoy the city's skyline.)

Here's a restaurant and entertainment guide:

The Kirtland Temple Historical Landmark in Kirtland, just east of Cleveland, probably is the most historical site in Greater Cleveland.

Here's some other info:

You might want to contact RTA and find out what your travel options are between the IX Center and downtown (the airport rapid station is very close to the IX Center):

Have a great time!

I live in Cleveland.

There are many places downtown to see. The Science center is nice, The Rock Hall of Fame, and many Museums in University Circle area.

I have a favorite restaurant but it is not close to downtown or the IX Center where the food show is.

Some areas to avoid. The East side of the city, most areas are very dangerous away from downtown. The east side is from East 9th street up to east 200th street, north of I90. Tower City in downtown is a fair sized shopping center, but many gangs there, especially in the food court area.

Stay to the west side or to the south and you will be fine.

Most hotels near the IX Center are nice but they will be expensive.

you are able to map out a path on Google Maps or Yahoo Maps. it is going to coach the path and expected driving time. the main inexpensive way is to speculate in a tent and tenting supplies. pass the shady resorts and locate stay at campground. KOA campgrounds are astonishing. State parks in many circumstances have astonishing campgrounds too.
