For one, how does one "accidentally" eat a hot dog? But, anyway, the reason behind not eating hotdogs is the risk of listeria (same as with lunch meat). The risk is always there, whether you're pregnant or not. However, listeria can have grave effects on a fetus. With that being said though, the risk is so minimal, it's not even worth worrying about (when you consider that only about 500 people a year in the US ever get listeria.

What do you mean by not properly cooked? Because I don't know too many people who would eat a raw hot dog. But anyway, the hot dog should be heated so that it's steaming. Eating hot dogs and cold cuts that aren't heated poses a risk to pregnant women because the meats could be infected with bacteria and cause listeriosis. This is a rare occurrence, but women who contract it can go into premature labor and their baby can die.

As others have said, there is a very VERY minor risk of coming in contact with the Listeria bacteria.
Just to let you know how minor the risk is, here are some numbers: only 0.7 per 100,000 healthy people are infected with virulent Listeria each year and of those only 30% of cases are pregnant women (almost 70% are immune compromised individuals). So, really, you’ve got better odds hitting the lottery.

A hot dog is so full of chemicals, it is unlikely to affect you or the baby.
The key foods to avoid are liver pate (too much vit A) and things like soft cheese, whippy icecream and prepacked lettuce. You can get nasty bacteria from them.
Don't eat raw / uncooked meats - but don't panic over a slightly underdone hot dog. Think of the hundreds of pregnancies where mothers don't care what they are putting in - and a healthy baby comes out.
If you get sick at any point, always get checked out, but don't worry your way through your pregnancy. Enjoy it, it's as much a part of having a child as the baby being in your arms.

When eating un-heated hotdogs and lunchmeat, there is a small risk of getting an infection called listeriosis that can have very negative affects on your baby, including miscarriage (even though they are already cooked, they still need to be heated up to kill bacteria!). But, seriously, the risk is very, very tiny. I wouldn't go around eating un-heated hotdogs and lunchmeat on purpose, but don't worry about it if you already did it. You and your baby are most likely going to be fine. But go to the doctor right away if you start feeling abnormally sick, like you have contracted food poisoning.

Edit: What M L said is not necessarily true - some women can get listeriosis or other kinds of food poisoning and not even know it, but their babies will be VERY affected by it... their immune systems aren't developed like ours are....

Hot dogs are already cooked. You are just heating them up, so you will be fine.

When I was 7 months pregnant. I got food poisoning from mayo. My son came out fine, although he doesn't listen and has a very smart mouth. hhhhmmm...

Hot dogs are cured, fully cooked meat already in the package. When you cook up a hot dog, you aren't really cooking it, you are just heating it up again, its just like any other cooked deli meat.

So, its my opinion, your child will be alright!

the fears with hot dogs are listeria & nitrates.
listeria is not that common (but is bad if it is present!)
and nitrates won't do any damage if amounts are limited.

one unheated hot dog will most likely be fine.
it's better to heat them up though, just in case, and limit the amount you eat.

Hot dogs are fully cooked before you buy them. Even if they weren't there's no reason to think uncooked pork would particularly hurt a baby. It's yourself that you need to be conscerned about there.

I could be wrong, but I dont think hot dogs are meats you have to worry about if you dont heat all the way. I know that when I was a kid, I would just slit a few places in them and cook them in the microwave. Ask your doc to be sure though. Good luck!
