A splitter is going to send the same signal to each monitor. In addition to that since it connects two monitors in parallel it messes up the impedances on the cable that need to be properly matched.
So the picture will be the same on both, it will be dimmer than normal and you may well get smearing and ghosting of the image.
Get a new video card that has dual head support.

When using a Y-splitter, you are only able to have a clone of the same monitor. This is because you are taking a single signal and splitting it into two monitors.
The only way you can have a dual-monitor setup that is not an exact clone is to either get a card that supports it, or buy a second, PCI based video card.

If you do it your way you are just sending the single signal from your video card and sending it to two places thus getting the double vision you are experiencing. you're going to see the same thing on both of those monitors. you need a video card with two ports.
btw....once you do get that setup going you will enjoy your gaming experience much more than now.(can't say the same for business applications)
