Yikes. I've gone through similar situations.

It may depend on the bank, but invariably, banks make you deposit the check (you may have to open an account). Then you wait a few days for clearance, depending on the check's amount...You might be able to get a provisional credit within 24 hours, e.g. $500 available funds from a $10,000 check.

Ask for a money order or official check, and go to a cash checking place....you will need to open a bank account somewhere in order to cash it at an actual bank, unless the bank manager is cool with you....Of course, going to a cash checking place, they will charge you fees for cashing it....if you open a new account at a bank, they will hold the funds for up to 9 business days....so your best bet is to ask your publisher to issue you a cashier's/official check...the difference being that an official check and a regular payroll check is paid for in advance, and should have little issues with availability of the funds.

go to a payday loan or check cashing company. they'll charge you a fee for cashing your check (usually 1%-5%) either go to 411.com or superpages.com, or call 411, or look in the phone book under check cashing and you can cash it. EASY.
