Never mind tracking down all of that information yourself. Here's a quick synopsis:

Machaut was an early-twentieth-century composer from Australia. He wrote the "Messe de Notre Dame", literally "Our Lady's Mess", after a three-day bender. Once his hangover passed, he noticed that his apartment was in a shambles, and he had some vague recollection of a lady having been there. The "Messe De Notre Dame" was controversial for its groundbreaking use of mezzo-soprano, harmonica, accordion, kazoo, and steel drums in combination with a string quartet. Also noteworthy is his use of 17-tone equal temperament in the second movement, and the famous fourth movement, which contains falsetto sprechstimme, with symbolist poetry and quotations from newspaper ads as a libretto.
