I understand, a lot of people do. No animal should be made to suffer, weather it be a human, a dog a mouse or even an ant or cockroach. The fact that you sought out the most humane way of killing the mouse speaks very well of your character. A lack of empathy is what causes much of the suffering in this world. However animals are not people and human and animal rights are not the same thing. Keep in mind that nothing lives forever, and the natural death of that mouse almost certainly wold have been a longer and less pleasant ordeal than the death you provided him. With people the individual is very highly regarded, or at least they should be. But with animals, while we shouldn't kill individuals without good reason, it is the population as a whole that counts. Also the dead mouse will facilitate and sustain new life. It will be eaten perhaps by a cat or raccoon or perhaps by beetles and fungus and bacteria turned into mulch and used by plants and in turn eaten by a fellow mouse. It is important that we do not give animals the same rights we give people. for example if hunters didn't shoot deer their populations would soar, then nearly all the dear would get sick and the population would crash. It is also imperative we do not treat people like animals. Many intelligent people have fallen into the trap of treating and viewing human populations they way one would look at animal populations, this can lead to some truly horrific ideas. What needs to be done must be done, weather it's killing a mouse, slaughtering cattle, or controlling the deer population, but the fact that we ask these questions, and have these feelings is what makes us human. We shouldn't be ashamed or afraid of these feelings.

you can get a mouse live trap. it has a one way door on it. I usually place a chunk of bread in it, and within 1-2 days my mouse will be caught. then just bring it somewhere far away from where you are at (at least a mile - otherwise it will come back) and release it.
