I bought my scout 2(1980) when i was in highschool and it has been out of commission for 3 years now due to ignitors burning out inside the distributor. I burned 2 brand new ignitors and dont know what the problem is. We did leave the truck idling for and hour or two because we just rebuilt the heads and wanted the gaskets to set. Any ideas will be helpful.

Ignition modules and coils are susceptible to burn out if there's bad ignition components leading from them to the spark plugs themselves (coil wire to distributor cap, dist cap , rotor, spark plug wires and the spark plugs themselves).

Check the spark plug wires for dry rot. Check the wire from the distributor all the way to the plug. If they have been sitting for three years throw them away and get new ones. If the old ones are cracked they will arc.
