An aging placenta means that calcium deposits are forming on the placenta, which compromise how well it works. Midwives will say in a healthy pregnancy half the placenta can die before it effects the baby, sadly I have never seen any studies to that effect.

Basically what will happen is they will monitor your baby more closely to make sure the baby is getting enough blood/nutrients/oxygen. The non-stress tests check that the baby is getting enough oxygen, ultrasounds will probably be used to monitor growth (however it should be noted clinical exam is as accurate, and in some cases more accurate). They will also monitor the placenta. If you have been taking large quantities of calcium (many antacids contain calcium) STOP! There isn't conclusive evidence that too much calcium in the blood effects an aging placenta but not taking excessive amounts of calcium can't hurt.

If the baby starts showing signs of distress they will recommend induction/c-section to take the baby early. However the ultimate decision and responsibility for the baby's health always lies with you. Some doctors are quicker to recommend interventions that others.

Aging Placenta

the placenta is only made to last in the body for a limited amount of time. there is a point at which the placenta will no longer perform it's duties if the baby is too far past it's due date. everybody is different tho, some women's placentas will last far beyond what doctors suspect. it is possible that you are further along than 35 weeks and therefore your placenta seems "older" than what they think? just trust your body and try not to let what the doctors say upset you.

Sometimes this happens when you are further along in your pregnancy. Especially if you go past your due date. Since it is happening earlier, they'll want you to have regular NSTs. All this means is putting your baby on a monitor and checking for accelerations in the fetal heart rate. They can tell if you baby is adequately oxygenated (meaning a well-functioning placenta) by looking at the heart rate regularly. Just follow your doctors instructions. Have the NSTs and everything should be fine.
