My guess is that the best age would be the earliest age at which you have the medical resources to do so AND the social resources to get through it. Let me clarify. Let's say you try to transition at age 17. Well, first off, your parents may have something to say about it and you probably can't afford it. So let's say 18, when you're independent -- except you still may not have the money to afford GOOD medical care, and that is going to be key to your success. In addition, you need to have the social resources (e.g. someplace to live, someplace to work, etc) to get you through it.

Earlier is better in that you have less stuff carrying over from your "before" self to you "new" self. If you have to explain to future employers or creditors why your college degree or past work history was under a different name, that's going to be more complicated. If you have to convince people whohave known you for 30 years to suddenly think of you differently, it's going to be harder....

So I'd say if you can do it as soon as you are off age and financially able, then that would be best. But make sure you have a support system of some sort in place.

good luck.

Gawd if I'dve know what I know now I'dve done it years ago!

I don't think there's a "best age" though...it's all down to confidence and how you'd handle the hassle you get when you get it....I've found the worse part is when you 1st begin, that's when you really need support from people to keep your self esteem up.
Anyone who's done it will tell you a different story...but if you're considering doing it....get as much professional advise as you can and start from there.
