I am thinking about getting my Master's in Urban Planning. I am assuming that one that I could use this degree is working with rebuilding poor areas. Am I off base in this assumption?

This is one of those hush hush majors that they don't really promote but has great money making potential.

The key is to make your way to cities like San Francisco, L.A., Seattle, Vegas, etc. Unless you already have connections to the Urban Planning Depts to these cities, it's going to be a little difficult to get your foot in the door. So start out in a smaller city somewhere close to the big cities. Bulk up your resume then apply to the big city departments.

The developers who have big projects in big cities will pay for any small info coming from the city they are building in. Small info means within the bounds of legality.

So you work in the local gov't and network with the developers.

I would suspect that you could work for a city in the Planning or Zoning Department.
