My baby is 7 months old, and she has been sick since last saturday. I think it's just a cold but she coughs so hard she looses her breath. I've been giving her the cough medcine my dr. prescribed to her last time. But the cough is still not better, in fact it sounds worse than it did when she first got sick,so this has been going for about week. Her nose has also been runny, first clear then it turned greenish yellow looking, she has not been running fever.I just feel dumb for taking her to the doctor because they have already told me babies get sick alot this young, what do yall think?

Don't feel dumb taking her in if the cold has gotten worse or just won't go away.

I said I felt like one of 'those moms' who bring their kids in at every little thing once to my pediatrician...he said he'd much rather see a kid too often for things that are nothing, than not see a kid enough and risk missing something serious.

My son had the same problem when he was around that age, but much worse than your baby he had a really bad cough, green runny nose, fever, and could hardly breath at night because it was so bad so I took him to the doctor all the time It seems like I took him every week because everytime I took him they always check his vitals and always tell me he just has a virus not and infection so they couldn't really give him any antibiotics. And again he subscribe him a stronger cough and cold medication with is not too good to really give to your little one and that still didn't work so I finally changed the doctor because after so many attempts to take him to the doctor for 2 month straight he was not getting better because the doctor swears that he just had a virus and I will go away eventually he said. I gave up and changed my baby's doctor I made the appointment immediately and the new doctor said my son had a throat infection and an ear infection so she prescribe him some antibiotic something the old doc did not
catch after 4 appointment in a row. I suggest that you change her doctor cause I could be something more serious than just a little cold but not necessarily.

In babies her age, they do get alot of viruses because she is so young with a small immune system that hasn't been exposed to alot yet. So she is still developing antibodies with each illness. She doesn't have fever so that's good. In viral illnesses, all you can do is treat the symptoms. What a physician would suggest is using a nasal aspirator and saline drops . Squirt a few drops of the saline in her nose and then "suck out " all the mucus you can get out with the nasal bulb. This will keep it from getting into her chest and help her breathe easier. Babies can't cough up and properly eliminate nasal discharge like we can so alot of the time it ends up in their throat and sounds scarier than it really is. Cold medications usually aren't neccesary as they do not work in children under 2 or a certain weight, in fact, can do more harm than good. Doctors are overprescribing them to pacify parents and now the FDA is coming forth with evidence that strongly advises against the use of these medications now. Use a cool mist humidifier to keep her mucus membranes in her throat, nose and chest moist. Increase her fluid intake too .This is what any pediatrician will tell you to do. I am an RN and have worked for doctors in pediatrics and family practice for 12 yrs and this is the care plan we follow. Getting sick is a natural part of a child's development and will help your child develop a strong immune system and her body will be able to fight off most viral illness better each time. We all carry viral illnesses all the time but have been exposed enough to where our antibodies fight it off to where we don't even display symptoms .

Babies aren't 'supposed to get sick alot' this young without a good reason.

And cough medicine should never be used for children because it doesn't work and may do more harm than good. Years of hearing "ask your doctor about [drug name]" and child fatalities does the FDA suddenly start to ban cough medicine for children just a week or so ago.

It could be just a cold, or it's some respiratory allergy or infection. If there's a hacking cough, wheezing, tight chest, and shortness of breath followed up by coughing up yellow-green sputum, then you know it's asthma or a condition with asthmatic like symptoms. I don't know the symptoms of whooping cough, but the name is self-explanatory. You never know, try a few more doctors but use common sense.

I am not a fan of antibiotics for kids, but 'green snot' is a sign of infection. If it stays green for more than two days I would take her back in or at least call the nurse (they are used to this) as this may need a little help to get cleared up. Also, Johnson & Johnson makes a Vapor Bath for babies. It comes in the same bottle as regular baby bath except the bottle is teal. It has always helped my kids. Best wishes!

With her coughing until she is out of breath, it could very well be whooping cough. This will cause you to cough until you loose your breath and pass out. If it is getting worse I would take her back to the doctor and ask them to test her for pertussis (whooping cough). If she had her vaccinations she should have had this one, but to be on the safe side I would check with the doctor. Whooping cough can be fatal.

It shouldnt matter if you feel dumb taking her to the dr. she needs to go. Obviously the cough medicine you are giving her isnt working. So why are you waiting almost a wk to take her to the dr? Make a immediate appointment.

Find another doctor to take your baby to. If you think something is wrong then follow your gut. If you have to go to numerous doctors before someone takes what you say seriously then so be it, your daughter is your number one priority.

She needs to go back to the doctor. Nothing is dumb when it comes to the health of your child.
