I plan to visit someone in the Oaks, behind Food Lion are there any civil war historical sites in the area? I heard that the Petersburgs battlefield National park is about 7 miles away from Old Oak Lane where I plan to visit in the Oaks is that a good walk...as you may tell I like to walk.

That area is not conducive to pedestrians or bicycle riders. Also, there are a couple of shady areas between your two points of travel. I suggest that you park at the main area of the Petersburg National Battlefield Park and walk the trails from there. There is a nice trail system set up for that park system, so I am sure that you will not be disappointed.

Good luck with your visit!

The Petersburg Nat. Park is simply too far away from the Oaks behind FoodLion. (Laugh) I use to party there quite a few times....the Oaks has it's share of ruffians. Not exactly the nicest apartment complex, unless you are talking about the residential area which is nice.

Closer to that is Fort Clifton which is down Elerslie, Left on Conduit, go all the way to end and it's on the right behind elementary school. Lots of nice works still intact.

Reason you cant walk to Petersburg is the Appomattox river. You'd have to go over MLK bridge into a very, poor, decrepid, hoodlum area of Petersburg. I highly suggest taking transportation. The battlefield is very worth seeing and is immense.

Also check out Lee's HQ during campaign right in Colonial Heights , the Voilet Bank which is converted into a library but still acts as a museum.
