Yea, I would have like to see this as the playoff teams, all point totals adjusted after just tallying up 2 for wins.
106 - Buffalo
98 - New Jersey
88 - Tampa Bay
96 - Ottawa
94 - Pittsburgh
86 - Atlanta
84 - New York Rangers
84 - Montreal
102 - Nashville
102 - San Jose
98 - Vancouver
100 - Detroit
100 - Dallas
96 - Anaheim
96 - Minnesota
88 - Colorado

For those people saying the rules should stay the same because ties are eliminated this way: wouldn't they still be eliminated if the team that wins the shootout or OT gets the 3 points for winning the game and the LOSING team gets NO POINTS, instead of 1? Maybe I'm having another one of those Erica moments and I'm missing something... (I mean, it's pretty hot outside. Lol.)
I agree with Zam's rationality... Well, except I like the shootout. (Yeah, I know; come burn my house down.) But it'd be great if the losing team didn't get any points. Even if the moves didn't become more exciting, the stakes would be higher and thus that would be more exciting for fans. I know I'm biased when it comes to shootouts though, because the Penguins had some exciting ones and won quite a few games that way.

100% with you on that one. Get rid of the point to the loser. It will make for a much better 3rd period as teams stop playing for the tie in the third. I think the overtime shootout format is fine for the regular season so keep it and give the 2 points to the winner. No more ties, no more boring last 5 mins in the third.
No game should be worth more in the standings than another.

I never understood why they offered a point for an OTL before the shootout was added in and a tie was possible. OT should be seen as an extension of the game, therefore, 2 for a W, 0 for a L makes sense. It seems awarding a single point needs to fit into the game somehow (otherwise what's the point of having 2 points for a win), but now a tie isn't possible. I think they painted themselves into a corner, because you really shouldn't be awarded a point for losing whether it's a shootout or OT.

I'm with you on that Bob. A game is supposed to be worth 2 points but OT/SO changes that. So why not make it worth 3 points for a reg win. At least then all games have equal value or just do away with OT completely and then every game is worth the same - 2 points.

I agree totally. I hate seeing teams with 90+ points and losing records!
The owners have been talking about this since the 80s (A team missed a playoff spot one year and had a large number of OT losses which at one point each would have put them in) and it was voted on 14x before they finally got the 2/3 majority needed (I blame the 4 new teams)

I certainly hate it as quickly as I hear extra advantageous people ***** approximately being extra advantageous as they take a seat with a freaking enormous-mac, an order of fries that would end worldwide starvation, and apple pie, and 3 pops. or maybe while a number of my acquaintances (who completely are not fat yet they think of they are) ***** approximately it and then as quickly as I say, "whats up, enable's circulate to the highschool and run a pair laps?" or some thing comparable, they are all like "Naaaw, enable's play movies video games and order a pizza!" and that i comprehend i'm doing the comparable element, yet you're complaining approximately complaining (:

Yea I see where your coming from. At least make it 3 points for a regular season win. I was never for it until I read this. This is a really good point. I don't know the person's name but whoever posted the standings for the no point ot loss thats what swayed me over. Really good question Bob.

I agree but what can we do? Just leave it a tie and no extra points? Or like someone said, a shootout? No points awarded to the other team? For now I am just glad we started the season.
Thanks for the Q. See you on the Ice...

100% Agreed.
Granted I don't like settling things with a silly skills competition like they do, but I also think that if the players went into the shootout with a 2 points or nothing attitude, IMO the shootouts would be way more exciting.
After watching the Wings -Ducks shootout, it looked to me as if half of the players had no clue what to do when they got their turn. If it HAS to be part of the game, then make it all or nothing so that players will be forced to dial in that aspect of their game more. Just my 2 cents.
