I bought a new Sorento in 2003 and am still driving it. It has been mostly trouble free with only the GM radio being a repetitive warranty problem. After 3 of those I went aftermarket and installed a Pioneer. Kia switched to Infiniti radios in 2004.
With 60,000 miles I have had to: Replace 1 oxygen sensor. Replace 2 taillight bulbs. Replace 4 fan belts and the timing belt at the 60,000 service. And I replaced the tires at 50,000 miles. That's it.
If you are seriously looking to buy a car, go get an issue of Consumer Reports Car Buying Guide. It will have a ton of information about all of the "real world" cars that are available. Check the reliability records of the makes that you are interested in and that will help guide you. Some of the biggest names in cars have some of the worst reliability problems. Also, go online to and look around there for even more information.
My dealer has been terrific. No hassling with him to cover the warranty work at all. He worked with me on the radio as much as he could but in the end it was just easier to go aftermarket.
The Kia is an extremely comfortable car to drive long distances. In 2004 I drove it 6,700 miles in 12 days and it was great. I have driven it from So. California to Ohio and back, to Canada and it has been to Oregon and back many times.
The company that I work for has several employees that drive Kia's. All of us are happy with our cars and have had no major problems.
Would I buy another Kia? Yes! If they make a car that fits your shopping list of features that you are looking for, buy it.

My wife and I just bought a brand new Optima. 10 year 100,000 mile warranty and much improved quality over older KIAs. We are very pleased with the car and the buying experience. We had a KIA to trade in so we got a great trade in price.

we bought 2 of the sephia models. one when they first came out and one a few years later for my mom to drive. I liked the cars. they get great mileage, are very dependable and had a great warranty. I put almost 200,000 miles on mine and then sold it to a kid who was still driving it last I heard. They are not "race cars" but then again, they will last many times longer than a small car that is hot rodded around anyway. I'm almost 6'3" and I fit in the car nicely. we took a lot of trips in the car with myself, my wife, and at that time, we had to young kids as well. They also had a huge trunk for a small car.

My boyfriend has a 2004 Rio and he loves it. It's the base of base models and he is fine with it. It has a little over 50,000 miles and has been in an accident and still runs like the day he bought it. The car won't freaking die.

The newer ones are much improved over their earlier models. Check a copy of Consumer Reports at the library to see which models they say to stay away from and which ones they think are okay.
