Inmates are by right allowed to marry---but why would someone free want an incarcerated spouse? I've interviewed scores of people--BOTH men and women (majority of whom are women), who have married prison inmates. I've done follow-ups on these people a couple of years later. Here's what I've come to find:

99% of inmate marriages fail, for understandable reasons--mainly the free spouse wakes up to some hard realizations.

1) It's senseless to wait 20 to 40 years till their prisoner spouse is set free.

2) They were baited and influenced to marry---soley for a steady source of $$$ deposits into their spouse's drawings accounts.

3) Such marriages are done out of convenience: The prisoner spouse gets extra good time for release credits and the free spouse gets serious welfare benefits and acceptance into "living assistance" programs. In cases where the jailed inmate is paroled, the marital union is pretty much anulled; both got what they sought. Nothing personal there.

And there have been the few cases where the jailed spouse comes home and a try for a settled married life is made. However, the wedding bell cracks when the dedicated free spouse finds out the true monster they married while THAT spouse was locked up. And I closed out one case where a woman married a drug addicted incarcerated loser--who wound up beating his wife to death---and put his gay lover in a near fatal coma.

There's NOT a single thing preventing you from marrying a imprisoned inmate, except common sense--should you decide to ignore that.

why would you want to ruin your life. Do you realize that once he gets out if he does that it will be very very hard for him to find a decent paying job. did you know that what ever he done to get there could also affect your potential for employement with certian institutions and types of jobs. You may think you love him and or you may just feel sorry for him. and if you want to continue a relationship with him that's fine but I wouldn't recommend marrige at least not until he has been released to society. unless he's on death row and has hidden assets that you could benifiet from.

Must be something in it for you besides getting a husband
you'll only see on visiting days.

I had a sister that thought she wanted to do this. We're all thankful she finally came to her senses. Never could get her to tell us why she even thought about doing something this dumb.

I always figured there had to be money involved some how because she sure wasn't doing it for love.

Agreed with above information....don't do this to yourself. I know that jail life is hard, and it's ok to be friends. He has no doubt conned you into expensive (collect) phone calls, sending him money/packages, etc - you are getting NOTHING in return!

Don't do this!
