My husband and I got married 7 months ago. We are now expecting our daughter in December. This is his first child but my second child, my first born is almost 13 years old...so its been a while since ive had a baby!

My husband wants us to host our own co-ed baby shower. Since we are now 1 family he would like to include all sides of the family to this event. We have picked a restaurant and we will being paying for the food.

I feel a lot of tention & confustion since baby showers are traditionally put together by family (my mother) & friends.

How do you pull this off without hurt feelings?

I think it's great. Men are excluded in this so often in this process. Include him now so that he'll want to be later.
I threw my own shower and it was great. I picked the decor and where and when and who was there. Everything I got to choose since it was mine I wanted to make those decisions.
Just remember there are men and don't let the games be to girlie so they will partake.

Great Idea. Congrats. Best Wishes!

Some of your friends might think it is greedy to plan/host your own baby shower. You should ask them what they think. If you have a few close friends who would support the idea and some that don't, ask the supportive ones to send the invites and "host" even though you'll be making all the decisions and plans. Hopefully these friends have the disposable income to help you buy the baby stuff you need. I would say that 31 weeks is not too early to have a shower. My baby arrived 2 weeks early and I was very glad that we'd had the shower already and had plenty of time to put together the items I needed. P.S. I had some pretty specific ideas about my own baby shower, so I made the plans, invitations, and asked a couple of key friends and relatives to take on hostess duties. They were very gracious and appreciative that I did most of the work for them.

A baby shower is very appropriate in your situation. However, it is considered tacky to throw your own shower. The restaurant idea is a great idea, but you need to find a family member or friend to coordinate it. If you still want to pay for the food and such, then that's OK, but you really should have another person helping you. They should fill out, address and mail the invites; decorate and host the shower so that you and dad can relax and enjoy the festivities. Planning everything on your own is more stress than you need to be dealing with. If your HUSBAND wants to plan everything, that is OK too.

I think paying for your own restaurant food is one thing, but actually considering yoruself the host is another.

When someone hosts their own shower (baby, wedding, etc) tis considered a solicitation for gifts. I would ask a friend or family member to play hostess. Maybe there is a couple, sinces its coed, who could work together. Give them th cash for the restaurant and have them send out all the invites on your behalf, so you dont offend anyone who is really into etiquette. Have the hostess/host coordinate teh gift table, games, etc.

I know a couple that did this and I did not think it was too weird. It was my first co-ed baby shower, but we had a nice time.
I think WI Mom is being a little silly. I don't see a shower a way to beg for gifts, but a way to get together and celebrate. I guess some people are greedy like that and maybe that is why they think everyone else is.

good luck!

you tell him that economically its better if you have family members handle it. Food for 20 people at a restaurant is expensive, now if he really wants both sides of the familly to be there just reasure him they will. Like for instance my bf i think is having his sister throw me a shower but he asked me for a list of my aunts #s and addresses so that my side of the family isnt left out. If your mom and lets say his sister organize it he can be involved with the cash so he feels in control. personally i like the idea of someone else organizing my shower cuz then i dont have to stress over stuff and i can just hang out that day. if you also feel this way let him know.
if you do end up organizing your own shower dont think its tacky because it is a celebration for the new member of the family and besides you are feeding and entertaining people, they arent just dropping off presents.

It is ok to have more then one baby shower, this is the one that you are throwing for you... as long as they are invited they should be happy. Let them feel part of planning any activities or games and allow them to be part of it too. Also, let them throw you another one if they want to, its not a sin to have two celebrations celebrating your new addition to the family! Congrats. Since it is the holiday season, Id recommend getting those invites out pretty fast.

Throwing your own baby shower is tacky.
I would have another family member or a close friend organize and plan it all. Invitation, decorations, etc. You can still pay for all the food if you'd like. Everyone doesn't have to know about that.

Sorry, but one doesn't host one's own baby shower. What about throwing a meet the baby party after the birth of the little one?

It is tacky and greedy to host your own shower.

If you don't have friends or relatives willing to host then you don't have a shower.

Just because you choose to have a baby doesn't mean you should beg people to bring you gifts. It is your responsibility to buy the things that your child will need. If you do receive gifts from others be grateful.
