gas flow is usually related to the cross sectional area. So the area is expressed in (let's just say) cm^2, is mulutiplied by a velocity with units cm/sec and the resultant is cm^3/sec or volume per time.
if you have a volume that you are concerned with, you can divided it by the volume flow rate. for ex. if you have 100cm^3 volume and a flow rate of 10cm^3/sec, then the volume is replaced in 100/10 or 10secs
