lol this might seem like a stupid question. Do I want a rental agent or a realtor or what?

Basically I'm moving to LA and I was wondering how I would go about hiring someone to show me apartments and how long ahead I'd have to book them and how much it would cost et cetera.

I know I can find apartments myself online but I just want to save time. I don't really care what the cost is but I'm not sure exactly how to find someone or what exactly their title is.

Thank you for any help.

you dont hire someone to show you apartments. Each building has their own person who shows available apartments or condo's.

Realtors represent people Selling / Buying ,
NOT renting . (usually)
You could ask if they have any lease options since the RE market tanked and some people could not sell their condos .

Leasing agents work for an individual complex .
Regular people do their own apartment hunting or have a family friend that lives in the area make recommendations .

L.A. is massive and best to target an area close to where you will be working or going to school .
Otherwise , there is about a 100 mile search radius .

There is an apartment listing button in the upper tool bar so you can narrow down your search area .

You can contact a local Realtor. Its a little known fact that Realtors are also licensed as leasing agents. You will tell them everything you are looking for. They will find it and set up a private showing for the ones that you are interested in. Its an added bonus to be working with a professional that will look out for you during your apartment search. Hope I helped.

Generally when you are RENTING, you do not hire anyone to go with you, you go alone. Each apartment building has their office person who will show you the apartment. Just make sure to schedule an appointment to view the apartment rather then just walking in.

A real estate agent can also show you apartments that they have listed. Not sure on pricing - for buying a home, they get a commission based on the sale price of the home.

There are condos, townhouses, and houses that are listed with real estate brokers and are not handled by agencies or property managers. If you are interested in such sample listings, you are welcome to request by e-mail providing your criteria as to the price range, number of bedrooms, and desired locality.
