The whole idea of cheerleading is to lead cheers (for people cheering for the actual sport or athletic events where the cheerleaders are appearing). I think somewhere along the way, things got skewed. Agree?

Cheerleading is a sport, but there is more than one type of cheerleading, so that is where a lot of people get confused. Because cheerleading did not originally start out as a sport, many people's views have not changed to reflect the current reality of what it is today.

Cheerleading started to get more athletic in the 70s & 80s when competitons came into the picture. When school cheerleading programs did not evolve with these changes, many of the best cheerleaders moved out of the school programs and into private club teams. These club teams (referred to as All Stars) train and compete against other club teams on a local, regional and national level. Many Division I universities offer full athletic scholarships to cheerleaders and there is a national championship. On the high school and college level - these are definitely athletes.

On the professional level, cheerleading is not a sport - they are more dancers and entertainers. They still work hard and dedicate a lot of time to their routines, their team and their communities, but they do not compete and their primary purpose is to support the team and entertain the fans.

Cheerleaders work just as hard as any other athlete out there... in fact it's sometimes harder then a sport because just think of being as physically active as you would in soccer or football, but at the same time having to look good doing it with facials and expression. They practice just as much, if not more then other sports and their season is year round unlike most other sports! All in all it's def a sport and people should give them the respect they deserve!

Not all squads cheer on teams. All star cheerleaders train only to compete. It is recognized by the Olympic Cousel as a real sport (i did a report on that once). It is extremely physically demanding and takes endourance and strength. If you think its not a sport, I'd like to see if you could survive a practice. Its hard core. You are dead wrong. its a sport!!

Hemingway said there were only three sports; mountain climbing, bullfighting and motor-racing. Everything else is just a game.
