I enjoy trying my hand at bonsais, but the leaves of my trees look disproportionately big. None of the books I referred to helped!

Prune! Cut it back by 1/3, the new leaves will be much smaller. Reducing the root mass by 1/3 will also stunt growth witch is the whole purpose of Bonsai.

Bonsais take a very long time to look the way you want them to. After all they are real trees which are stunted by pruning them. You have to continual prune both roots and leaves and then, maybe, in 20 years time, you'll have a Bonsai with small leaves. Better still just buy one already grown, it will cost you a lot of money though.
