Such as logos, or characters for a comic. Should I ask for a percentage, and if so, how much? And how do I draft a legal contract for such a transaction? Thanks for any advice.

The guy who designed the Smiley Face got $25, I think. You have to charge the same way any other artist charges. I think if you check around amongst other artists, you'll find that they all charge for the amount of time it takes, not how the company profits from it. If you try to charge differently, they'll just find another artist. The only artists who make a percentage are songwriters -- maybe you're in the wrong profession.

You mean establish a copyright on some other entity's logo?
Your best bet is to make up the logo, or whatever, and offer it through a lawyer. If it's accepted, work out payment arrangements.

If you are an employee of the company, then all you get is your salary

If you are independent, you may be able to include a royalty fee. You would need someone in contract law to help you
