I've watched this movie a couple of times and am still so confused about the ending. Can anyone explain to me what happened? I think that maybe for Donnie, he really did die when the airplane engine hit his room, and he dreamt everything else that happened. Or maybe he dreamt that he was going to die? Or maybe he wasn't dreaming at all?

If the plane engine came from his mother and sisters plane, then why were they still alive when the engine hit his room??

He was given a choice. It was about time travel. He was shown what would happen if he lived that night and then he was given a choice, go back and die so that your girlfriend doesnt die and all that bad stuff doesnt happen or continue to live and live with the consquences.
To continue on your response:
The engine would have came from his sisters plane if he had choosen to live, but since he choose to die it came from some other plane.

pretty much what he said.. although, it was a bit short sighted as well.. (not the answer but the outcome) Because the odds are the girlfriend is STILL going to die.. Remember she was with Donnie when her step father came and took the mother.. she was also about 2 seconds from being messed with.. possibly even raped by two of the guys from school before Donnie came up and talked to her.. so without him her life is even worse..
This wasn't exactly a dream.. he DID live through it.. and it is time travel.. (explained by the fact that it DID come from a plane from the past.. as I recall the one that his mother/sister where on for the dance competition)
there are are many layers to this movie.. I almost think they left it kind of ambiguous on purpose..

It's all about time travel... he found a way to go back to that day when the plane crashed and he put himself in his bed and died on purpose. He knew that if he had died that day, Gretchen wouldn't have died and he never would have killed Frank.

There is no answer the idea was for people to come up with their own ideas of what happened.
