Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim - In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Hello. I am an American Muslim woman married to an Egyptian. We live here in the US. As a Muslim, it is not permissible for my father, who is not Muslim, to be my guardian in regards to marriage. A teacher from our Islamic Center acted as my guardian (wali) for the purpose of our marriage.

If you are not Muslim, and you don't have a father or brother or uncle who can look out for your interests, you can speak for yourself in regards to marriage. Muslim men are allowed to marry women from among the Christians and Jews.

I am interested in learning more about why you are interested in marrying a man in Egypt, since there is always the danger of fraud on his part. You should really know all you can about any man before marriage and make sure his intentions are correct. Please feel free to contact me and God willing I can help you with this.

May Allah guide you to that which is best in this world and the next. Ameen.

fi Aman Allah,

Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid

In Muslim society women need permission from their father or another male guardian to marry. That is just how it is.

Depending on how strict the branch of Islam is, the woman may need permission to travel, to work, or to do any number of things.

Why don't you get married in a non Muslim service? You are not required to convert to Islam to marry a Muslim. If you are planning to convert, I think you should study up on it a little more before plunging into matrimony.

It can be a male person you trust as a brother or father, doesn't exactly have to be someone that is related to you. I was there to support my friends wife when they were getting married because she didn't have anyone from her side.
