My doctor told me the same. They said if you go to a deli and watch them slice it, you can be sure it's more safe, where as pre-packaged and sub shop meats (which sit out for hours) are more likely to contain Listeria. This is also found in foreign and soft cheeses, which usually are not pasturized. In the states we normally pasturize everything, however occasionally even apple juice is non-pasturized.
Listeriosis is a foodborne illness caused by Listeria monocytogenes, bacteria found in soil and water. It can be in a variety of raw foods as well as in processed foods and foods made from unpasteurized milk. Listeria is unlike many other germs because it can grow even in the cold temperature of the refrigerator.
Symptoms include fever and chills, headache, upset stomach and vomiting. Anyone can get the illness. But it is most likely to affect pregnant women and unborn babies, older adults, and people with weak immune systems. To reduce your risk
Use precooked and ready-to-eat foods as soon as you can
Avoid raw milk and raw milk products
Heat ready-to-eat foods and leftovers until they are steaming hot
Wash fresh fruits and vegetables
Avoid rare meat and seafood

Yes, it can be dangerous for the baby.
Listeriosis can harm a fetus, or even cause miscarriage.
Look - a lot of people doubt this or have never heard of it, but it can be serious. Check out the links below.
By no means is listeria in every lunch meat, but the risk is there, so why take it?

I never heard that you should heat up lunch meat. I ate cold lunch meat during both of my pregnancies with no problems at all. It is fully cooked. It shouldn't be dangerous. Although you shouldn't eat rare meat, but lunch meat is never rare.

It is amazing at what we worry about these days. My first pregnancy 12 years ago that wasn't even on the list of things not to eat and nothing went wrong. I've eaten it during this pregnancy and nothing is going wrong. If it was that unsafe to eat it would be recommended to heat it up even if you weren't pregnant.

i think most packaged lunch meat is cooked therefore it should be ok. watch out at some of the smaller delis as they may not have fully cooked their meat and the bacteria in undercooked meat can be dangererous.
watch that other meat you eat is fully cooked as well. i usually like my steaks rare or medium-rare, but when i'm pregnant i order it well done.

I eat lunch meat that is prepackaged and I do not warm it up, I personally think that it's disgusting warmed up. Nowadays there are all kinds of silly restrictions. I don't smoke, drink, or do drugs.... other than that, if I want a ham and cheese sandwich, I eat one. Good luck to you!

As long as you know the lunch meat is fresh and hasn't been stored or set where there may be bacteria its completly fine to eat it cold.

I have never even heard of that. As long as the meat is well cooked and you dont have to worry about getting sick from it. You should be ok.

its better to be safe that sorry, right? pregnancy is a very happy and difficult year for a mother..so you better be careful of what you eat, its better to reheat cold foods or meats that are precooked since it can harbor food borne illnesses like salmonella...you just need to be careful of everything you put in your mouth because you're not only feeding yourself, you're also feeding your baby.
