As a beginner, you'd be smart to start from scratch and make a whole dress just to see how it works. Your local fabric store will have books full of patterns. Then when you gain confidence, you can start changing out the sleeves on dresses that you already have. The main thing is that the armhole of the sleeve has to match up to the armhole of the dress.

When you buy your pattern, make sure it's labeled "easy". The pattern envelope tells you how much fabric to buy.

I'm kind of part way through learning about sleeves. You know how the top of the sleeve is like a wave ~ (Heheh, like that except bigger!) Well the larger the wave, the higher and lower the parts of the wave go, the puffier the sleeve. That's what I was told. I haven't tried it yet.
