Wow, I just finished reading the other answers. It's hard to imagine where some people get their screwy ideas, isn't it? I live in the Bay Area, too. There's one gay pride parade a year and gay people are in various stages of dress, so to one guy that apparently means gay people are running down the streets nude every day in the Financial District.
Do these people get out much? It's so open-minded (not) to say you would never visit a certain city because there are liberals there. I can't imagine saying I would never visit Cincinnati, St. Louis, Houston, Indianapolis or Orlando because there were "too many conservatives there." In fact, I've visited all those cities.
Are people so narrow and so afraid that they don't think they can enjoy what a place has to offer if there are actual LIVE liberals around them? Weird.

Here's a moderate's view SF. I live down the road from SF in SacTown. I love the people there. I go there when my wife wants her Ghiradelli ice cream fix or to see the Bush Man (He rocks). I think Gavin Newsome is an opportunistic tool, grabbing onto the Gay Marriage thing the way he did, knowing that it wasn't going to fly in Califronia.
If you haven't been, you should check out San Francisco. Even if you're not liberal, you'll love the place.
Edit:
suthrnlyts - Flying into Oakland? There's some minor street cred. I'd have figured you for a "land in San Francisco and avoid the commoners" kind of girl.

I was born there and haven't been there in 6 years because I am embarrassed and ashamed to see what's happened to that once proud city. I actually moved away from the Sf Bay area in 2001 and swore I would never go back because it has just gone out of control with it's politics. This is the danger and the disease you see from a one party system with no checks.
Anybody that says San Francisco is super diverse with many opinions, this is a complete lie. I have been all over the country and San Francisco is the most intolerant city I have ever seen or been to. If you are a freak and you agree with the Socialist Liberal agenda, then you are fine. Don't dare oppose any of them or have any Conservative thought or ideas, the so called tolerant idiots over there don't like that at all.

I've been there four times in my life, most recently in 2001. Next to Seattle, WA, it is the most beautiful city in the US. However, just vacationing there can be super expensive. Last time I was there, we had to stay in a crappy motel in Marin County to avoid paying $200 dollars a night for a hotel..but then again, this was during the playoffs and the Giants were playing at home.
I find it strange that many conservatives chose to focus on SF's gay population when other American cities have very active gay communities as well. Columbus has a pride parade every year as well as other so-called deviant festivals like Comfest. Yet we are probably the most moderate and accepting city in the country.

San Francisco could be likened to the Sodom of the 20th Century - if only it had been destroyed. Now it's the Sodom of the 21st Century. The Gamorah of the 21st century, is, obviously, some 430 miles down the coast...
Seriously, though, yes, I've been to SF, it has a cool skyline, and some nifty old buildings, but it's crowded with homless people to the point that it's not even a nice place to visit anymore.

I've vacationed there in the past and have spent a delightful week in SF. That was 10+ years ago and I don't know how much it's changed. I stayed at the home of an artist who lived in one of those multi-story homes on one of the hill sides and it was beautiful! It was in August and I had brought summer clothing and nearly froze to death! LOL
I confess that it was a bit of a 'culture shock'. But I really did enjoy the trip and the sites!
P.S... I flew into Oakland. HA!
Deep, down there. See there? Assume nothing. hahahaha!

We went to California last year for our wedding anniversary, to San Francisco and San Diego. It was great... we did all the typical tourist stuff and had a wonderful time.
One of my best friends (and very liberal, by the way) has lived in San Francisco for the last 8 years and loves it. While we don't agree on politics, it's always fun to debate with her because we do it with respect and keep things in perspective.

They hate the military, also I just watched something about one of their parks being covered w/ needles...and then they talked about how they have a program where the drugies can take their old needles and exchange them for new ones....yeah, thats helping the problem. They should be trying to stop people from doing drugs NOT giving them fresh needles....
Anyway, I think back in the day I would have loved to go visit san fran, but now days I think I will stay away from that city!
