All of the above are good. If the noise from the front of the car (you didn't specify) and is more prominent while turning, though, you might want to have the CV joints checked out.

You first have to determine if it is an engine knock or is it something loose ready to fall off. The easy way to tell is to fill the tank with high octane fuel, and see if the noise goes away. It will take awhile for the fuel to reach the motor so give it a couple of days. If it does, then look a the EGR system for a fault. If not you may need to have a garage put it on a lift and visually look for loose front end components or anything that rattles and produce the noise you are hearing.

Most likely one of the catalytic converter heat shields has broken a weld. It's perfectly to have the rattling shield removed. They are made of stainless steel and if they or it is totally broken loose on one side it can be removed by repeated bending back and forth. Don't bother with a hammer cause it "ain't" going to work. Stainless steel is very soft but at the same time tough, it work hardens very slowly thus it's necessary to bend it many many times before it finally breaks off.

Your best bet is to get your car on a lift to make sure exactly what the problem is. Any independent mechanic could find the cause of the rattle in a couple of minutes. It may be the forward flex joint in your exhaust system, or a worn sway bar grommet.

I like the answer above concerning the sway bar links because loose or worn out ones rattle like a wooden box of rocks.
