Because of the payoffs. There are two of them:

1. Emotional gratification. This is equivalent to monkeys throwing feces. It relieves some of our worst animal frustrations.

2. OCCASIONAL success at dominating the opponent. There are times when the other side is completely taken aback by sheer ferocity. It's rarely, if ever, about wisdom. It is about The Contest and The Appearance of Victory. Shout the other guy down, then pretend you won. It's a gamble, but gambling has been shown to induce repetitive behavior akin to hard drugs. If the behavior works sometimes, keep at it... and AT it... and sometimes it pays off.

A potential third payoff is group-identification and getting the support of those who agree with you. Boosts self-esteem. And a fourth would be compensating for low intellect.

When I was a child, I thought we were better than this. I hated discovering otherwise.

People get as riled up about politics as they do religion. Therefore, the old saying "Never talk politics or religion in polite company." But YA Politics is certainly not polite company, that's for sure. I agree with you completely. If you notice, the tenor of questions in this forum run to the immature and inflammatory. Sometimes I come in this forum, and out of hundreds of questions, I will find only four or five that are even worth answering in a serious manner. The rest are specifically designed to prompt nasty answers and get people's blood boiling. I guess it's the nature of the beast. It's almost impossible to stay involved in politics if one doesn't develop a very thick skin.

I think most people are simply frustrated with both parties. All the are doing is fighting. The business of the people is not getting done, and all the promises the politicians make is ignored after the election. Grown men and women are calling people names and spending all their time trying to destroy decent people. It is shameful. It seems nobody cares about helping America, only making sure the're on the right 'attack' side so they will b elected come November. It's very disappointing to see such so-called 'learned' people act so childish. So much time being wasted. So many lives being lost fighting for the very peoples freedoms to act like babies. God forgive us.

Human nature.
When you run out of arguments you have two choices, give up or call names. That's how it works. Just go to a kindergarten and take a look at two little kids arguing.
You'll see also that they have a third option, they can live with disagreement and keep playing together. Later in life we loose that skill.

I don't think that is correct. There is a lot of name calling here, but I don't think it is being done by the majority. A significant minority does tend to act out, especialy when the are factualy challenged, and have no way to make a rational arguement.

They are not the majority, but I understand how it would seem that way.

There is a lot of hate in politics today. Just watch some of the names of avatars here. Many express there hate or do there name calling via their avatars even before they ask or answer a question.

I don't know, and it really bothers me.

My Mom is liberal, my Dad is conservative and they have been happily married for 40 years. And they talk politics all the time. My sister grew up into a liberal, I grew up into a conservative. She is my best friend, and we also talk politics frequently.

I work with people from 22 different countries - all different religions, races, countries of origin (all legal, though). We talk politics frequently and it's totally fun.

Why? Because we do it WITH RESPECT.

The name-callers are resorting to agrumentum ad hominem. It means argue against the person when you cannot argue against the facts.
It is a weakness most people have because they are not trained debaters.

Because they are close minded. They don't realize they are just as short-sighted as they people the insult often are. Both sides have thier cool-aid drinkers and fear anything that doesnt go with their ideas.

Because they cannot argue politics and they think this name-calling makes up for lack of intellect.
