Some of the best black & white scary movies are:
The Creature From the Black Lagoon, old Twilight Zones, and the original 'The Blob'.
If you can find the movies with Lon Chaney Jr. as the Werewolf, that is scary, but not gory.
If you want a little comedy mixed with scary, Try 'Abbott & Costello meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'. The kids wouldlike that! I still do!

Wait Until Dark (1967) with Audrey Hepburn playing a blind woman terrorized by men who think she has something they want. It's definitely an edge of your seat thriller. It's all suspense too - no blood or gore.
Night of the Hunter with Robert Mitchum (1955) - this one is a dark thriller. Mitchum plays an evil self-proclaimed preacher who marries a widow for some money and ends up trying to kill her children.
I've also heard that Alfred Hitchcock's movie Rebecca (1940)is very good but so far I haven't been able to find it anywhere.
The Other's is also a good scary movie with no gore. It's not a classic (yet), but if you haven't seen it give it a try.
Good luck with your movie hunt. You're building memories with your kids that will last a life time!

Back in the 1940s, RKO released a series of excellent black-and-white chillers, produced by Val Lewton. They are all available on DVD, and are all still scary, atmospheric and memorable.
The best of these for family viewing are:
The Cat People
Curse of the Cat People
The Body Snatcher
I Walked With a Zombie

Psycho is the greatest black and white classic horror movie. You can also try other Hitchcock movies, the old Dracula movies. Even though it's in color, Carrie is also a classic. That movie made Stephen King popular, and turned Sissy Spacek into a star.

I like "Rear Window" with Jimmy Stewart, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It's scary in a suspenseful way, but it really kept me tense on the edge of my seat. Great movie!
