I've never seen any women wearing scarfs in my area and the Muslims I've met wear American outfits and blend in nicely.

yes, there is a muslim school, a couple of mosques, grocery markets specifically marketed towards muslims. some do wear clothing to single themselves out. but i don't want to hear this crap "people always treat me different and single me out for wearing the hijab"(the scarf thing) Well you are kinda singling yourself from the rest of the population who don't wear it so what did you expect? I mean this isn't saudi arabia where women can't drive cars or be outside there homes without permission. be happy your here, and if you still choose to wear it, just prepare yourself, cause many western people still look down on it as oppressing women, for obvious reasons i stated before.

Yes there's a mosque down the road next to a Hindu temple.I went down there one day and visited both(I couldn't go into the mosque because I'm not a Muslim, but the Hindu's didn't mind me looking around their temple.)Both Hindu/Muslim women wear scarfs to protect their religious sense of integrity, and to not be judged on beauty/physical appearances.

I'm a Muslim and have quite a few other Muslims living in my area, most of them cover up their hair. I think in America Muslims don't want to be targeted with racist comments after what happened Sep 11

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim - In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent the Merciful

Hello. I'm an American Muslim woman and I live a couple of hours south of DC. There are many thousands of Muslims in the DC / Northern Virginia area. When I used to live in Alexandria I always loved going to the store and seeing men and women dressed in traditional Islamic clothing. Now that I'm in a town with fewer Muslims, it's a rare treat to see another sister wearing a scarf.

Why do we choose to wear clothing that makes us stand out? Well, first of all, a woman like me who wears loose clothing and covers her hair does so because covering in this manner is prescribed in Islam. We do it to please Allah. It doesn't matter if we are in Arabia or Pakistan or Korea of the United States.

Why does anyone in the US wear distinctive dress? Why do some Orthodox Jewish men where black suits and round-brimmed hats? Why do Goth kids wear black with makeup? Why do some people have purple hair? We are a country of three hundred million people. We are an immigrant nation, so unless you are Native American then you or your ancestors came from somewhere else. It is not unpatriotic or divisive to be proud of one's religion or cultural heritage. It is this colorful palatte of diversity that makes America so interesting. To expect for people to abandon their faith or culture in order to fit in to some bland template of "Americanness" is very narrow minded. A person can be fully involved in American society while maintaining distinctive manners. I dress in a loose robe and scarf, and I take my son to swimming and Tae Kwan Do. I worship according to my religion and I watch football and Nascar. I share my faith with others and I am politically active. My faith and my manner of dress do not hinder my involvement in American life in the least. I dress as I do out of respect for my own self and in obedience to God. Would I be more American if I dressed like Beyonce or Britney Spears? I think not.

May Allah guide you to that which is best in this world and the next. Ameen.

Fi Aman Allah,

Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid

If you live in a rural area we tend to run away from the south and small towns due to racism, prejudice, anti-islam... even though I am non-practicing, I am scared to go into a rural town.

We have a mosque on East Desert Inn Road. It is bracketed by two Christian Churches. I see women shopping in their veils and head dress all the time. Muslims believe it adds honor to a woman because it shows protection of her virtue. Personally I think they look better then the young ladies running around with skirts so short you can see the results of their last pelvic exam.
