For example, the nationalist believes that while other nations act invariably on the basis of self-interest, his country is historically unique, in that it makes great sacrifices for the good of others.

this is just my opinion but few countries do anything for other countries without expecting something in return. Only in the case of disasters is help rendered totally out of that country's goodness. The US is one of the few that go to the aid of other countries without tacking on a "bill" for some kind of repayment. That in itself makes this a country that is unique.

-_- wow I call him my "personal drill sergeant" and he calls me his "hot, salty surprise"; you know, just the regular nicknames guys have for each other. -_- She's also upset because she's caught us showering together several times. Doesn't she understand we're trying to conserve water? -_- She doesn't like that we leave her home with the kids while we take off to the beach for the day, either, so one time we let her come along, then had the nerve to be upset that we made her put her blanket a few hundred yards away from us! -_- She claims that even from that distance she could see us giving each other massages, but I TOLD her that for suntan lotion to work, you have to work it in for at LEAST an hour! -_-

Supposedly the actual definition of nationlism is:

Devotion to the interests or culture of one's nation.

The belief that nations will benefit from acting independently rather than collectively, emphasizing national rather than international goals.

Like most 'isms....the truth is in the pudding...meaning here, how it is actually practiced! - vs what the words say.

In today's world there are many, many, many issues that are common-global and call for international addressing of such

What's the alternative? Give up everything you own so everyone in the world can live from hand to mouth? Reunification in Germany should make a good case study. Nationalism is just another term for keeping what you earned!

Nationalism is the cause of every war throughout history. People in power justify it with religion, being the superior race, etc. but what it all comes down to is Nationalism.

You mean like Nationalist China? Maybe Burma in its current situation as it kills pacifist citizens? Maybe like Iran or Iraq? Yes, they are all acting in the Nationalist role.

Hmmm, to some extent I think.

But I don't think people are that stupid nor that blind. It's just the old "us against the world" mentality that makes them react that way publicly, no matter how much they may revile the administration and it's policies to friends and family.
