There are also different types of fog such as radiation fog, etc. When you drive through fog you are literally driving through a cloud that has formed on the ground, mist is just water vapor.

A fog is a cloud that develops and gets in contact with the ground. It can reduce visibilities to 1/4 of a mile. A mist is just a lighter drizzle.

what i know is that,when it's very cold you'll find fog outside on the ground coused by the vapor in the air,if i'm wrong pls fell free to correct me!
And yes mist rise from the ground only if it's wet or moist.

I tend to think of mist as larger droplets of water that fall. Fog is just smaller, suspended droplets

Thick mist is called fog.Only visiblity criterion differentiates them .Otherwise both are same.
If the visiblity is 1000 metres and less, it is called fog.If the visibility is more than 1000 metres but less than 2000 Metres ,it is called mist .This criterion is followed in Aviation Meteorology.
If the visbility is more than 2000 Metres, then it is called haze.
