I can never understand why managers want to "save" a pitcher when it's basically do or die in the playoffs.

Pinella was off his game last night.

He believed that his bullpen (especially Marmol) would do better. Also, he was thinking ahead that Zambrano is most likely pitching on Sunday and with the cramping he has had lately, he really thought that he could rely on the bullpen more. Marmol is a phenomenal pitcher, but he just had a bad night. He is a kid who has never been to the off season before. If we would have a better offense not one person would question Lou for pulling Zambrano when he did.

What I want to know is... if he was planning to take Zambrano out of the game anyway, why did he let him hit with the bases loaded and 2 outs? I know Big Z's a good hitter as far as pitchers go, but he is still not the guy you want at the plate in that clutch situation.

not to be a snob, but you answered your own question: "Pinella was off his game last night."

Chalk it up to the 'curse' is what I'd say. There is no rational thought behind what Sweet Lou did last night. The Cub fans gave their last manager Dusty Baker a hero's welcome when he arrived, and all but tarred and feathered him as they ran him out of town (Baker unfortunantly had to contend with oft injured Wood and Prior - see St Louis this year with a decimated rotation). I would venture to guess the Cub Fans now have their excuse for failure once again. Or maybe they can blame the fan behind the backstop with the flashing Neon light for this year's yet-to-be played out play off blunder.

I agree 100%. There's way too much reliance on the pitch count these days. You need to win that first game in a short series.

Maybe he saw something in his movement, who knows?
Maybe Carlos was cramping up again in his arm. I think that Carlos is a wuss personaly.

If anything, i'd like to see the Cubs not rely so much on the long ball as they've done all year.

Do not they know that Webb has many of his outs as ground outs?

Pinella is trying to be conservative with cubs favorite psycho slobbering nutjob zambrano, so maybe he'll be able to use him this weekend if needed.

Lou Piniella manages a lot like Phil Garner did. I'm not sure anyone knows what he was thinking when he pulled him. Maybe a fight between Zambrano and Soto was about to ensue.

Lou Pinella is an idiot. I'll never know why clubs keep hiring this man.

Hey back off Pinella. We need Zambrano healthy for the ENTIRE playoffs, not just one game.

I like his decision.
