I'm not a parent, but I read a question a few minutes ago and was curious about how the rest of you feel.

If a parent is abusive/neglectful, do you feel that their children should be taken away permanently, or after counseling/parenting classes/jailtime if necessary, they should be given the opportunity to regain full custody of their children?

I understand that your opinion may vary situation to situation, but lets say it is moderate to severe abuse that is occuring.

Great question!! I think if they go through everything that is asked of them, counseling, parenting classes, drug rehab, etc. and they have shown that they are willing to do whatever it takes to regain them and show progress and change then I think they should have another chance. If they get them back and go back to the same old way then I don't think that they should get another chance!! It's so important for children to have stability in their lives!!

Was the moderate to severe abuse mental or physical.
what were the ages of the children being abused.
If the child is an infant and the abuse if physical
INSTANT termination of parental rights
If the abuse was more along the lines of neglect (not providing a clean house or refusing to send the child to school) second chances can and should be offered since there is a definitive way to measure and monitor the progress
But in general I am all for termination of parental rights for the youngest of children. When the children get older they are much harder to place...but when the child is young, she might get the chance to have a 'decent' life with a loving family long for a child.

No they should not be given a second chance they should of been good parents to begin with and if they thought that they wouldn't of been good parents why did they have the kids in the first place. There are too many childless couples in the world who would give their right arm to experience what it is like to be a parent and have so much love and care to offer a child so give them a chance.

I would have to say it would depend on the situation. Did u see the movie Saving Isaah? A crack ho threw her new born baby in a dumpster in winter to die. Later she wanted him bakc after a family had had him over 2 years. NOPE! sorry!!!! No 2nd chance on that one. If beatins, drugs, and just plane cruelty are involved that child deserves a better life with someone who will love them and be there for them. I have a son and let me tell u i would see blood from my body to make sure he had what he needed! He ALWAYS comes first no matter what! Just ask my hubby!

that's a tough one.
On one hand I want to say no, they should not be given a second chance but on the other hand, perhaps they could be given a supervised second chance...
