Read his letter to congress as to why he vetoed it. You probably dont remember a while back he boosted the programs funding by 20% and extended it for another 5 years. The veto doesn't end the program either, Bush for once did exactly what he told congress he would do if they loaded this up with pork.

That intent of the increase of $60 billion towards increased Health Care for children was to help families with incomes too large to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance.
The veto came from the president to keep the USA out of socialized health care...... by vetoing, the health care for those children on welfare is not effected.

Several folks already gave thoughtful articulate answers to this question. I have nothing to add to what they said other than to agree that President Bush did the correct and responsible thing. He's not running a popularity contest. He's running a country. I just wonder if we can send Mexico a bill for the health care we provide for the children of Mexican citizens who cross our borders illegally? I'm sure Mexico is not as accommodating to illegal border-crossers from its southern border as we are in these very generous and great United States of ours.

The President stated that his reason for vetoing this bill was not that it was for children's health care but because it expanded the children's health care plan to people who can afford to pay for their children's health insurance. As originally written this plan was for the working poor. People who cannot afford health insurance. People making up to 2 times the poverty level. (This is about $35,000 to $40,000 per year) were qualified for the program. The bill the President vetoed would have raised this to people making up to 4 times the poverty level or up to $83,000 per year. It would have also raised the age limit to 25 (this is an adult in my view). In his view this is the opening the democrats are looking for to get socialized medicine in this country.

I do not think that Bush wants to do anything that the Democrats would like to do. He always thinks he has a better plan like bombing Iraq and cheating people out of their lives. I would like to bomb his village and ranch because he is a terrorist. Oh got carried away there. He has convinced himself that he is smarter than everyone else and only his plan will work. He is not willing to work as a team to get better things for the people in the United States. I say the heck with republicans and democrats they do not want to help us they just want to control the country that is it. We will never get satisfaction from either of these parties no matter what they say or promise. They only care about the title President of the United States. People in America we need to wake up and get rid of these parties that are all supported by companies of interest and donations from others who want things.

Because the Democrats set him up to do it. You see this bill would have required too much of the budget to be spent and was ulitamelty full of garbage. The dems knew he would veto it and that it would make him and his party look bad, so they pushed forward with it knowing he'd veto it. The republicans who did support did so only so that they could say they could. This is just an example of party politics being played out in America and congress waisting time so their parties can increase in popularity.

Because in this case, "poor children" are actually 25 year olds living at home with their parents who make up to $84,000 a year.
"Poor kids" are already covered. This bill is about buying votes from young "middle class adults" and making smokers, who tend to make even less, pay for it.

Read the bill.
Kids up to the age of 25. I always thought that 25 year old people were adults.
Households making $80,000 would be eligible. At 80k you should be able to afford your own health insurance. If not consider trading in the BMW on a Chevy.

He felt that this was a program for those who could not afford to pay and yet a family making $84,000 a year would be eligible.

Because wealth redistribution is evil and dishonest, and these "kids" will someday grow to be adults and should not be stuck paying ridiculous taxes for this crap.
