I think most of us went there with the idea of using college for that foothold in starting a career (since the idea of college=good career is practically drilled in us at a young age), or as a "punching-the-ticket" item for future advanced positions within a company. Getting an education while doing this is just the cherry on top.

Very rarely do I see other students who are there just for an education and not a career in mind. I think only a few housewives I've run into while going to my community college fit that criteria, like one from an art class who, when we were all introducing ourselves, said she was there to spend some time while in between her child's pre-K periods.

There must be some people sufficiently wealthy or naive to do it but not many. Almost everybody is at college (once known as the great industrial parking lot) for job training/preparation.

SOme of these people get educated in a general way by accident. I suppose there are a few that try to do both, at least at first.

Actually it makes sense to get a job and then educate yourself when you can afford it.

I reckon that most go for an education. If u are doing English or philosophy or something like that its not about career.

I think I did. I already was working in my major field, although I did expand it from Cinema to Cinema Theater and I was never much into drama or acting and found that a challenge.
