the idle speed of my civic is 2000 rpm, how do i fix this!!?

my 95 civic EX coupe has a 4 cyl 1.6L Vtec, and the idle speed in neutral and with the clutch shoved in is 2000 rpm
i realize that this is not normal, so is there some way that i can tune it down? i was thinking this has something to do with the O2 censor, but i really don't know... so i'd appreciate any help i can get!! i don't mean to sound "car-retarted" but seriously..

the idle is definitely not "normal". Normal idle on that car with the clutch depressed is between 650 rpm and 800 rpm depending on what accessories are on.

the idle is controlled by an electro-mechanical motor called an "idle air control valve". if the valve is sticking becaue of carbon building up inside the valve you will have a very high idle.

before you condem the valve there are two thing to do. the first is to have the battery disconnected and left disconnected for 5 minutes. This will erase the 'learned values" for the cotnrol of the idle. Then reconnect the battery. Start the car and lt it run in neutral for 10 minutes with no accessories on (no radio, headlights, air conditioning etc.) then shut the car off and start it. The relearn may cure the problem.

if the idle is still high you'll have to take it to a technician. there is an adjustment for the base idle that is made by turning an idle adjusting screw. That could be the problem but quite honestly the idle just going out of adjustment would be abnormal. More likely they will have to test the idle control valve to see if it needs to be removed and cleaned or replaced.

Here's another test you can do-if you are at idle and have the clutch in, turn the air conditioning ON and see if the ifle changes. If it goes up then the problem is with the learned value or the base idle adjustment. if it doesn't change then its probably the idle air valve.

try teaching the car the new idle first and go from there
