You are correct in that the Commander in Chief has the power to order our military anywhere in the world. However, as has been previously stated, Congress, (elected) has to do the funding, and that same Commander in Chief, (also elected) might or might not have any military experience at all. Its not as if any President has to rise through the military ranks to become the Commander in Chief. The people ultimately have the power in this country, and while it might take us a while to act, when we do, we are a force to be reckoned with. None of our elected officials should ever forget who they work for.

Commander In Chief is only one of the titles we give our President. Yes, he commands the military. He also runs the Executive branch of our government, which by and large has nothing to do with the military. He is not a member of the military and the title simply means that he is the one with the ultimate responsibility to decide when and where to deploy the military. Congress still has a say as well, though. If he really was a military dictator, the military would take over the news agencies and broadcasting facilities, because that's the first thing you do when you want to control a government. If that happened, you wouldn't be hearing all this anti-Bush stuff from them anymore, would you????
Doesn't the Prime Minister of Canada have much the same roll with your military as our President does here?

To some degree, you're correct. Prior to the 1950s, an act of Congress was required to engage in warfare. Since then, the President, as Commander in Chief, can use executive orders to engage in warfare (though strictly speaking, not in a "war") without the approval of Congress. However, Congress does have financial oversight of the military, and they have it within their power to deny funding to military action that they don't support. Denying funding is a wildly unpopular move because it is painted as hurting the soldiers in the field for political purposes, but they do have the power.

Are you making a statement? Or looking for an answer? The US military is completely and without question under the control of the President AND the Congress. Always have been. I can't fault you for not studying American civics because you are Canadian. It does rile me that American children are just as misinformed. I blame it on the socialist teachers in the US. If it chooses to accept the responsibility, our Congress is an equal branch of government. But they have abdicated this responsibility in the name of partisan bickering for now. This leaves more power in the hands of the Executive branch of government. But not to worry, what goes around, comes around in America. We will be just fine. I like to point out that our country survived Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter, and we will survive this too. Thanks for your concern. I love to ride my Harley around Lake Superior. You have a very pretty and very friendly country up there.

Well, Congress makes and passes laws, but the military industrial complex is still VERY powerful. In fact, Dwight D. Eisenhower warned us that this would happen many years ago.
