My X husband not only verbally, physically and emotionally abused me; but he also financially abused me. Persuaded me to get credit cards because I had the credit to do so. Asked that he have a card as well. Managed to max them out and then eventually quit paying them. He was paying the bills so I was depositing my check thinking that things were being taken care of. And trust me....they get their money some how...they garnished my wages. My mistake, didn't know that the bills weren't getting paid until the sheriff came knocking on the door serving papers. I left him 2 years ago and just have finally finished paying off the last of the 25,000 debt. It took a total of 4 years to get it paid off. He thought because I had 25% taken out of my paycheck every week that I wouldn't have the $$ to leave him. WRONG!!! Prior to leaving him I had gone to a bankruptcy lawyer to see about filing for bankruptcy....He said I couldn't file by myself because I was married, we would both have to file. Then after looking at his income over $80,000/yr. He said that the debt was too small compared to his income and that there was no reason that he couldn't pay to keep them from garnishing my wages.
I haven't forgiven him for the financial ruin...that is a hard thing to do when you can't even go finance a piece of gum without have to give blood and your first born.

My husband and I recently applied for a home loan, and he found out that his credit score had been dropped 100 pts because his parents took out a credit card in and signed him as an authorize user. His mom passed away and his dad didn't pay on the card for 3 months, so they called collections. My husband contacted the credit card company and they confirmed it was their error, and that if he were to submit a letter explaining the problem they would fix it which would take years to do, because it was on all three credit reporting agencies. This really sucked because they would even lock in the rate at the bank we applied for the loan with and would only give us a maximum of five years at it fixed. Well, my husband is going to work on the letter, this next week and we went through another mortgage company that locked us in at 30 years fixed loan. There is usually a way.

My husband was laid off with no notice or severence pay when we had a new baby. We filed bankruptcy and lost our house and had to move in with my parents. We were even on food stamps.
Just remember that no condition is permanent. Keep praying and hang in there. A year later, he had a job making $80K a year and we had a condo on the beach. Stuff does turn around eventually.

Divorce, loss of business because of divorce, house repossessed, debts multiplying because of divorce, teenage daughter pregnant. That all happened 11 years ago and although I get through it and now have a new partner and two lovely grandchildren I still have mounting debt and starting from the beginning with my flat and job.

I was 24, split from my boyfriend and couldn't make my mortgage payments and eventually lost my house.
I had to start all over again..... move back in with my parents and got a loan from my dad to pay some of the money back.
I'm 38 now and married with a toddler and live in a rented flat as i'm too scared to buy one again. To be honest i don't know if i could get a mortgage even if i wanted to. I'm not blacklisted but i must be down as a high risk.

I lost my job when my daughter was 3 and I had to move out of my place. I am a single mom so I had no secondary income to rely on till I was back on my feet. I moved back home for about 6 months and saved all my money from my new job (which i found 2 weeks after I lost the previous one) and moved into a new place. We have been fine ever since.

Lots of very good stories on here. Afraid i can't compete. Not that I would want to.
Here is how my week started and will end. I discovered on Monday that my nursing career is probably over. I have no idea how I am going to survive. I do have some small debts.
I am also involved in an amateur theatre project which has me on stage performing on Saturday evening. More than enough on my mind!!

Negative equity in my house, I lost a lot of money due to buying in the housing boom in 1991 and selling in 1998. I was in debt for years, I paid most of it off, but still have some to pay after 9 years. Bought a house with my ex and lost money when he bought me out, only got about half of what I should have, I was in a difficult position and had to take the money offered or nothing at all. I could cry just thinking about it, buy hey life goes on.

My Dad got us in to terrible financial trouble. He was an alcoholic and used every penny we had on drink.
We had the bailiffs at the door.
As a teenager I wrote to all the HP companies, the bank, credit card companies etc. and with the tiny income we had as a family, we began paying everybody off a little at a time.
I think my Dad, as out of control as he was, was actually relieved when I wrestled the finances out of his hands.
Now, as an adult, I never buy anything unless I have the money in my pocket. I am debit free, and with spending money wisely, I feel in control of my finances and my little life.
xx

My business partner secretly declared bankruptcy and moved out of town, leaving me holding the bag on our business. His bankruptcy locked up our previously flawless credit. Eventually I had to shut the doors of the business. My wife and I spent several years clawing our way out of debt as a result. But, we got through it with our marriage intact.
