No matter where you live, I believe that web & graphic designers, particularly E-commerce website developers are always in popular demand. One of the beauties of the web is that you can develop a site for anyone in the world and unless a face to face meeting is necessary, your clients are limitless.

Most people/companies already have a website today. Many people are looking to have their site redesigned or add functionality to what they already have. One thing a lot of people are adding is the e-commerce functionality. This allows small companies to expand their market from a small local area to a global market place. A company that has 2 employees could spend the money on a nice e-commerce site and could appear to be just as big as a huge corporation. So just like the other said location doesn't matter. I work for a web design/programming company and we have seen some clients go from selling a couple hundred dollars worth of product online per month to selling over a quarter of a million dollars worth of product per month, simply by creating an improved e-commerce site for them. I just wish we got a cut of that huge increase. :) Also e-commerce sites make it easier to do business. It automates a lot of the business processes and can allow you to grow without having to hire new employees.

As said above, WHERE is of no importance!
Most websites are there to sell something, so yes, there are limitless (potential) clients.
However, most people who can design a single HTML page using a webeditor, such as Dreamweaver, believe they CAN do proper e-commerce. So, be prepared: there are only a few programmers who can do it, and thousands of others that are only amateurs. Since they do not know what they are doing, their competition is fierce: they offer a total solution for a few hundreds, get the contract, then fail. They give to the pros a very bad reputation and kill customer's confidence.
Finally, you also have the competition of the "third" countries, such as India: they have very good programmers, but since the cost of living is little, they can offer good jobs for peanuts!
It is a CUTTHROAT business!
