A Wan = Wide Area Network. This is what your internet service provider has. To set this up you would need lots of cash and alot of networking knowledge.

A LAN = Local Area Network. This is a local network that could consist of 2 computers or 100+ computers. To set up a basic one you would need computers, a dhcp server (Like a router) and some Ethernet cable.

A WAN (wide area network) is the integration of 2 or more LANS (local area networks). The LANs are linked together by a point to point connection (which can be a VPN using the internet as the carrier), a T1, a wireless dish to dish style point to point, a private fiber run, etc. A router is the WAN to LAN interface at each LAN interface. You use a static routing table or a dynamic routing protocol on the routers to enable them to route to each other.

A LAN is a local (usually within 1 building) network, usually connected by CAT5 cable. You use a network switch to connect the LAN devices together. A router is required to access Internet and to access a WAN link.
