The first round of games in the playoffs is called the Division Series. There is the AL Division Series (ALDS) and the NL Division Series (NLDS). There are two division series games in each league, the AL and the NL.
The winners of these two games play each other in the next round called the Championship Series. Again there is an AL Championship Series (ALCS) and a NL Championship Series (NLCS). This game determines the winner of the AL (pennant) and the winner of the NL (pennant) and those two face off in the third and final round of the playoffs called the World Series.
The ALDS and NLDS are best of 5. The ALCS, NLCS, and World Series are best of 7. So if the Red Sox win 3 games against the Angels, they will advance to the ALCS to await the winner of the other ALDS matchup, the Indians and Yankees.
Hope that cleared it up for you.
EDIT: Mary, you are right in that this is the way you learn things by asking questions, but when you give the wrong advice, they aren't learning anything. If you aren't sure of the correct answer, don't give an answer. Your answer is not even close. First, they don't have to win 5 of 7. It's a best of 5 series, first to win 3 games advances, but they don't advance to the World Series, they advance to the AL Championship game (ALCS) where that is a best of 7.
Also they don't play 3 in Boston and then 3 in L.A. and then 1 in Boston. It's 2 in Boston, 2 in L.A. and 1 in Boston. If it's a best of 7 series, it's 2 in Boston, 3 in L.A. and 2 in Boston.
The first to win 4 games in the ALCS then advances to the World Series, another best of 7 series. The first to win 4 games in the World Series are the World Series Champions.

Each playoff round is a "best of" and a team needs to win their round to advance. For your example, the Red Sox would face the winner of the Cleveland-New York series, with that winner advancing to the World Series as the American League representative.

. If the Red Sox get by the Angels then they will play the winner of the Yankees and Indians. Then whoever wins that series will play the winner of the National league in the World Series.

Thank you for asking. That is the way you find out things.
The winner goes on to play in the World Series.
They have to win 5 out of 7 games before they are able to play in the World Series.
As soon as they finish 3 games in Boston they come back to L.A. and play 3 if the Angels are still in contention.
If both teams have won 3 each they play the seventh game to decides who goes to the World Series. The seventh game will be played in Boston.
The winner will play either the New York Yankees or the Cleveland Indians. Whoever wins between those two.
A star for you for asking..

They advance onto the AL pennant series. If they win the majority of 7 games in that series, THEN they go onto the World Series.

Big J, maybe the asker of this question if not from America? Yes, it's called the World Series, but it's not the "world", maybe the asker is from Africa, or maybe it's a girl who is trying to better understand baseball because her man likes it and she's trying to become informed. How old were you when you learned the correct answer?
