I think probably The Flinstones, if you're looking for like the longest running (other than the Simpsons, of course, but you're looking for classics...). Everyone knows the theme song, and I think pretty much everyone can name all the characters. Plus, who doesn't love Cocoa or Fruity Pebbles? lol

I don't consider Flintstones to be a classic cartoon because it was so different from other cartoons of its time. It was more of a sitcom than a cartoon. True classic cartoons are Bugs Bunny, Roadrunner, Tom and Jerry, Porky Pig, etc.

there is Disney Sorcerers Apprentice with Mickey Mouse. The one where the brooms are dancing and he is on top of a hill and water smashing around him.
Also probably Flinstones, supposedly they say that when Pebbles was born that it was a big deal back then.
Bugs Bunny was definitely a classic character. To me, one of his best cartoons was the one where they spoofed the opera "Marriage of Figaro" or the "Robin Hood" episode.

For television it's The Flintstones, it was TV's first 30 minute animated sitcom and opened the door for The Simpsons and Family Guy.

*Note: Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks made 2 Mickey Mouse cartoons prior to Steamboat Willie...The Gallopin' Gaucho and Plane Crazy both in 1928...unfortunately, both were held off until Disney added sound effects to them.

I have a daycare in my home and the one cartoon that will stop all my kids, ages 2 - 5, in their tracks is the original Tom and Jerry. Haven't found anything that holds their attention like that show does.
