We doubt ourselves and ask questions of those around us, parents, elders, superiors etc.. Out of the process of attempting to answer them, the people create theory or hypothesis and out of that, philosophy. As Hegel put it, language is the medium of the spirit and to understand the meaning for the word 'thought' as existent in the other using the word, needs dialog, an exchange of beliefs, notions, concepts and understanding.

'§ 1583

As each of the objects is posited as self-contradictory and self-sublating in its own self, it is only by an external compulsion [Gewalt] that they are held apart from one another and from their reciprocal integration. Now the middle term whereby these extremes are concluded into a unity is first the implicit nature of both, the whole Notion that holds both within itself. Secondly, however, since in their concrete existence they stand confronting each other, their absolute unity is also a still formal element having an existence distinct from them — the element of communication in which they enter into external community with each other. Since the real difference belongs to the extremes, this middle term is only the abstract neutrality, the real possibility of those extremes; it is, as it were, the theoretical element of the concrete existence of chemical objects, of their process and its result. In the material world water fulfils the function of this medium; in the spiritual world, so far as the analogue of such a relation has a place there, the sign in general, and more precisely language, is to be regarded as fulfilling that function.'

For one with the thought, it's easy for him to understand as it it his own. But if you mean for others to understand your thought, it sometimes takes a lot of efforts relating it,...and it may still get misunderstood.

A thought is one whole idea in itself. We have a huge database of thoughts - millions of them in different hues and patterns. They are messages created from electrode signals within the mind - --assumptions or conclusions...or at times, indecisions. They are the basis of our actions and reactions.

Without the thought, we're just empty shells littered on the sands of life... without purpose nor use.

Hi,
What a question! My thoughts go round and round trying to think of an answer. My thoughts connect with yours as you question and I try to answer. Thought can be in symbols; thought is language unspoken. There is conscious thought and subconscious thought; thoughts we can control, thoughts we have no control over but how do we understand thought; there's a need to go deeper in thought to try to find an answer!!!

send a monkey to catch a monkey!

so to understand thought grab yourself a metaphysics and send it where society and the intellect meet ( where thoughts have mastered our boilogical urges and the best ideas save countless lives)
