My first suggestion would be find adajacent studs; cut the drywall to them; and determine the patch procedure. Without any detail at all about the size; or configuration of what might be ductwork through the wall; etc. ; some more details might help.

To merely slap up a piece of drywall and spackle/mud it will likely be unsatisfactory. Certainly not a job I'd want MY name on.

In an easy fix you can add 1 x material to the drywall that is intact; INSIDE the wall opening; Over lapping into the cut out area; allowing a framing/bracing/backing for a new piece and screw the new piece to the bracing; then patch/mud/paint the entire area. It won't strictly be as stable as using opposing studs; but certainly better than TAPING the back side (Which you can't stritcly access anyway)

Again...it largely depends on the "LARGENESS" of the opening, you Don't mention.

An Added thought: I'd hope that the contractor who installed your AC unit goes out of business for less than quality finish work.

what you will need to do is cut a piece of drywall about 4 " bigger the the hole in the wall then draw a square within the piece of drywall the same size as the hole making sure that you have about the same amount of excess all the way around use a razor knife and score the drywall at the line and remove the exess leaving the paper this will keep the drywall plug from going thru the wall while you put your joint compound down

you can put masking tape through the hole and position it on the edge, all round the hole. Then place the piece of drywall you've cut into the hole. The tape will hold the piece in place while you spackle (lightly). then add another coat once it's dried.

good luck

try to cut and fashion several small pieces of wood and slip in the hole until they won't fall any longer, then cut out a piece of drywall and cut it exactly, use some wood glue or best yet some wooden modeler's glue to glue the drywall to the wood, then, use drywall repair putty
