If you already have a wireless router then all you need is a wireless network adapter for the desktop. Either a USB or PCI adapter will work fine.......

Well you have a few option here.

1) Connect a really long ethernet cable from the router to the desktop.
2) Purchase a wireless access point and connect it to the router and purchase a wireless network adapter for the desktop.
3) Replace your existing router with a wireless router and install a wireless network adapter in your computer.
4) Move the router into the same room as the desktop.

There are two general choices.

Choice 1 - Run a CAT5 cable from router lan port (if it has a built in multi LAN port switch) to each. This entails running cable which many are reluctant to do. Cable running can be a lot of work in some cases, fairly easy in other cases and circumstances determine difficulty of cable running. Wired networks are safe, secure, faster than wireless and less problematic.

Choice 2 - use a wireless network. This saves the cable running chore IF you have good wireless connection. Wireless is subject to interference, signal loss, signal weakness, is slower than wired, and can be a security issue. Many feel that the labor saved in cable run avoidance is more than consumed in the security configuration; worse yet many find that, due to their needs and the building's nature, they need to move the wireless access point, add more than 1 wireless point, etc and end up running cable anyway.

I suggest you carefully look at what it will take to do both and select the easiest. I caution you that most wireless advocates understate the problems with wireless signal integrity and with the security steps. Most marketers of wireless devices suggest install is trivial and problem free but they do not get into the details associated with security nor do they have any way to overcome signal loss due to distance, interference, blocking, etc - and if such becomes evident they then advise you the problem is a normal limitation of wireless. Finally if they state the security is not really needed, ask them if they would leave their new car unlocked with the keys in it in public as this is the equivalent of what you are doing when security is not implemented with wireless.

I install both types of networks and it is not easy to define which is best without investigation.

Is your router wireless or what??? If it is wireless you will need to install a wireless card onto your computer and then it will be able to connect. If your router is wired you will either need to go to an electronics store and buy some wire or you will need to purchase a wireless router. Hope this helps!!!
