There are mushrooms growing in the yard. The yard used to be cow pasture, and is now my yard, but the mushrooms are HUGE! They are growing directly above the septic field, so I am wondering if they are safe to eat. They are all white, about 10" in diameter, maybe 5" tall, and there a about 50 of them.

According to your description those mushrooms might be a variety known as "parasol mushroom."

They grow in fields and also in certain woods. Th parasol mushrooms are all white with some brown spots on the hat.

The tail is not really pleasurable to eat, but the hat is delicious.

It just happens that it is my favorite mushroom. They taste still better when young as this picture shows it:

There is nearly no chance to b confused with a non-comestible mushroom. For there is no non-comestible mushroom of that size.

However, it is always advisable to check things with picture and description. See my links above.

If you have to ask the question, you shouldn't eat them. Never eat any wild mushroom unless you are a mushroom expert.

Some of the most poisonous mushrooms are white.

If you want to try identification, try the key below; if you are wise you will not eat them even if you identify them.

have you ALREADY lost touch with reality??????... NO!!!... you cannot eat the mushrooms that are growing over your septic tank/field... they're full of crap... YOUR crap... and who knows what other germy stuff????..... NOT good for eating or head trips.... NO!!!.....

edible mushrooms are grown on farms for growing mushrooms.... OR... you take Botany and graduate with a degree in it after four or six or more years of college plus several years as a practicing botanist and THEN you can decide if anyone can eat what's growing in the woods or other non-septic area.... GET REAL!!!.............

I get them too in my yard, but unless you are experienced in this, I'd stay away from them. I pick them and throw them out. My brother ate a mushroom from a yard one time and got extremely sick. You're better off buying them in a store where you know they are safe to eat.

Dang, I wish I was there to ID them for you. They could be one of natures gourmet delicacy's or a deadly Amanita. DON"T EAT THEM !! The only safe way to ID them is take several to a local mycological or mushroom club in your area. These clubs are more common than you think. RScott

NO!!!!!! the only mushrooms that you could eat in a cowfield are not white!!! and unless you like psychodelics, I recommend you stear clear of anything you don't get in a store. YOU WILL GET VERY SICK!!! if you know someone who eats one, induce vomiting, and alternate with milk to slow absorbtion by the stomach.

Like my mother used to say:"when in doubt, throw it out".

Get an experts opinion before you eat one, otherwise you may end up floating down the way and commenting on all the pretty colors before you drop dead from poisoning or something.

Not really on topic, but once I bought some at the store and found a toenail clipping in with them. It was pretty gross. Who knows what we are eating nowadays.
