My daughter is almost four months old and still using the stage 1 nipple. I have tried the stage 2 nipples (Dr. Browns) and it seems to come out so fast. My question is how do you know when they should be using a stage 2 nipple?

dont worry you'll know nothing is timed some kids do things at a certain age and other take their time! and if she was ready for stage two that would mean she isnt getting enough from one and this would frustrate her so she would be crying during feeding time, so dont worry she will let you know when its time same as diapers its not when they are a certain age its when you notice this thing is too small for my big girl!!! lol

Actually, my son used stage one all the way up until he was off the bottle at 12 months. We also used Dr. Browns. The stage 2 seemed to gag him. Some baby's just like the slow flow, that is all! My friends baby would throw up from eating too fast if they used stage 2. So, you aren't the only one ;) Good luck!

I use Dr. Brown bottles as well, and I used the method we used in the islands. I realize he needed a bigger hole because he would suck harder than he use to, and was a bit more fussy when sucking. I heated a small common pin to sterilize it, then I punched one more hole near to the original hole and gave him a bottle of milk with the newly punched nipple to see how he would suck. Worked like a charm.

Regardless of the brand I found that the age suggested for nipples always was a little ahead for my baby. If you change nipples and she chokes it means she's not ready for them yet. Try in a couple of weeks. Your baby will "tell" you when she's ready. That's my personal experience.

When they dont choke on the stage twos.

If its coming out too fast for her and she's coughing and sputtering its not time yet. If she can use it without doing anything like coughing or choking then she's all set for them.
