From Desperate Housewives season premier, this apparently caused an uproar in the Phillipines:
The episode showed actress Teri Hatcher, who plays Susan Mayer, asking during a medical consultation to check "those diplomas because I want to make sure that they're not from some med school in the Philippines."
The apology was made a day after chief aide to Philippine President Gloria Arroyo said the line of dialogue appeared to be a "racial slur."
This prompted an apology by the show's producers. Why is this at all "racial" ? Because there are Filipinos in the Phillipines? I see it as questioning the location of origin of the diploma, a 3rd world nation (maybe 2nd by now?), I;m not slamming the Phillipines, they are doing the best they can, but hey, the standards are not what they are in the US, face it. So that's what's being questioed, not RACE. Would anyone complain if the comment targeted the quality of Chinese-made toys? Read the news lately? I think not.....

You know, while I still say it wasn't a "racial" slur, it was kinda down on the Phillipines, so to get the idea across w/o insulting anyone, the line could have been "from some offshore medical school". I guess that wouldn't have singled anyone out, but may have pissed off everyone outside the US. any better? I dunno.
